Advent (l’avent)

En Suéde nous avons une tradition que chaque Dimanche, commencement quatre semaines avant Noël, on allume une bougie dans un chandelier spécial. Le premier Dimanche on allume une bougie, le deuxième on allume le premier et le deuxième bougies etc. La tradition avec les bougies est assez par un compte à rebours à Noël.

La tradition est originaire de quarante jours période de jeûner qui avait l’habitude avant Noël. Ce quarante jours contenait cinq ou six Dimanches, mais pendent le 11ième siècle le temps jeûner était raccourcir pour quatre semaines et était nommé “advent”.

Advent

In Sweden we have a tradition that every Sunday, beginning four weeks before Christmas, we light a candle in a specially designed candlestick. On the first Sunday we light the first candle, on the second Sunday we light both the first and the second and so on, the tradition of the candles is somewhat of a countdown to Christmas.

The tradition stems from the forty day period of fasting that used to precede Christmas. Those forty days would include five or six Sundays, but during the 11^th century the time of fasting was shortened to four weeks and was christened “advent”.
